Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 West Bromwich Albion F.c. at Hillsborough
Sheffield Wednesday beat west bromwich albion f.c. 2-1 at Hillsborough, and the timing made it a sharp day for both clubs. Wednesday opened the scoring before a late West Brom response, while the hosts were celebrating the completion of their takeover shortly before kick-off.
Chalobah and Palmer strike
Nathaniel Chalobah put Wednesday ahead in the first half after West Brom failed to deal with Max Lowe’s inswinging free-kick. Liam Palmer doubled the lead four minutes later, and his finish was his first goal in two years.
Those two goals in four minutes gave Wednesday control of a match they needed to finish on a high after a season spent wiping out an 18-point deduction. They were also trying to avoid becoming the first team in EFL history to finish a campaign on minus points before ending on zero.
Morrison’s first permanent game
James Morrison took charge of West Brom for the first time as permanent boss and made a triple change at half-time, but his team still spent most of the match chasing the score. West Brom had gone six matches without conceding before Chalobah’s opener.
Karlan Grant pulled one back late, turning in a goal from close range after Isaac Price’s free-kick deflected off Tayo Adaramola. West Brom then pushed through 10 minutes of stoppage-time without finding an equaliser.
West Brom finish 21st
The result left West Bromwich Albion in 21st place in the Championship, four points above the relegation zone. They had already secured safety with two games to spare, but the defeat closed Morrison’s first permanent outing with a setback after his earlier 11-match stint as interim boss.
For Wednesday, the first home league win of the season arrived on the same day the club announced the completion of its takeover by American consortium Arise Capital Partners. The EFL also withdrew a potential 15-point deduction for next season shortly before kick-off, removing another threat from a club that had spent the year fighting the table as much as opponents.
