Lewis Skelly Starts in Midfield and Wins Seven Duels

Myles Lewis-Skelly started in central midfield for Arsenal against Atletico Madrid after being told only when the players arrived at the Emirates, and lewis skelly responded by winning seven duels, more than any Arsenal player in red and white. The 19-year-old’s display came after a season in which he had played around 1,000 fewer minutes than in his breakthrough campaign.

Arteta Turns to Lewis-Skelly

Mikel Arteta finally used him in the role that first shaped him at Hale End, replacing Martin Zubimendi in midfield. Lewis-Skelly had been pushed down the left-back pecking order after making that position his own last year, and Arteta had resisted the temptation to move him inside earlier in the season.

The selection gave Arsenal a look at the version of the player developed in academy football, not just the one who broke through on the left side. He has 31 appearances this season, but the minutes have dropped sharply from the campaign when he rose from academy prospect to full England international.

Seven Duels Against Atletico

Seven duels won was the clear number from the night. No Arsenal player in red and white matched it, and that output backed up the decision to use him in central midfield against a high-level opponent.

After the match, Lewis-Skelly kept the praise short. “That’s the boss, I’m grateful for him,” he said. “Inside I was buzzing, but I was just glad the manager put his trust in me [to play in midfield].”

Arteta was just as direct about what he saw. “He had a spectacular season last year when he jumped into the first team, but he had some difficult moments after that,” the manager said. “He stayed very humble, very focused, very aligned with what we wanted to do, and I knew he was ready.”

Arsenal’s Midfield Decision

Arteta also pointed to Lewis-Skelly’s work in training as the reason for the switch, saying: “He’s been showing in training every day the opportunities that he had to play. He’s done it, and today he really stepped up, and I thought he had an incredible performance.” He then added, “Because probably I don’t have a clue, and maybe I should have done it earlier, I don’t know.”

That leaves Arsenal with a clearer read on a player whose reduced minutes had fuelled summer talk about his future. The match against Atletico did more than fill a midfield spot for one night: it gave Arteta a live answer on whether Lewis-Skelly can handle central responsibility at a time when every appearance carries weight for club role and international standing.
