Tyler Adams: Manchester United Intensify Mateus Fernandes Pursuit
Manchester United have stepped up their interest in Mateus Fernandes after passing on him at the end of last season, when tyler adams and the club were still weighing their midfield options. The 21-year-old is now at West Ham, and United are revisiting a player they let go once already.
That shift comes with real money attached. West Ham paid £38million plus £4m in add-ons for Fernandes, who has stood out during a difficult season for the club and has recently broken into the Portugal senior team.
United’s Fernandes reversal
United’s move back toward Fernandes marks a clear change from their stance under Ruben Amorim, when they passed on signing him while he was at Southampton. Since then, they have watched him closely this season and intensified their interest as they plan to strengthen midfield in the summer.
Bruno Fernandes is part of that pull. The Portugal and United midfielder has been impressed enough with his compatriot to recommend him to the club, while Mateus has already said Bruno is his biggest role model and that he looked up to him at Sporting.
West Ham and the price
West Ham’s position gives the story more bite. Fernandes has been one of their better performers this season, but he will almost certainly leave if the club are relegated, and even survival may not be enough to keep him.
For United, the timing fits a wider rebuild. Kobbie Mainoo has signed a new contract through 2031, but midfield remains an area they want to strengthen, and Fernandes now sits among the names linked to that search.
Portugal and United’s midfield
Fernandes has also carried his form onto the international stage. Roberto Martinez called his progress “incredible,” and the 21-year-old has already played alongside Bruno Fernandes for Portugal.
That combination leaves United facing a familiar kind of transfer decision: whether to return for a player they once passed over, now carrying a higher price and stronger backing from one of their own. West Ham spent heavily to land him, but the market around him has only grown louder.
