Arsenal Reached 2006 Final as Champions League Winners Chase Continues

Arsenal last reached the champions league winners stage in 2006, when Arsène Wenger’s side went all the way to the final in Paris before losing to Barcelona. That remains the club’s most recent appearance in the competition’s showpiece match, and the men’s team still have no Champions League title.

Wenger’s 2006 Run

The route to that final was stark. Arsenal eliminated Real Madrid, Juventus and Villarreal in the knockout rounds without conceding a goal, then met Barcelona at Stade de France. It was the first time a London team had reached a Champions League final.

Wenger’s side lasted 90 minutes against a Barcelona team with Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto’o and Deco in the starting lineup. Xavi and Andrés Iniesta were on the bench, while Lionel Messi did not play beyond the round of 16 because of a season-ending hamstring injury.

Barcelona’s starting XI that night was Valdés; Oleguer, Márquez, Puyol, Van Bronckhorst; Edmilson, Deco, Van Bommel; Giuly, Eto’o, Ronaldinho. Arsenal answered with Lehmann; Eboué, Touré, Campbell, Cole; Pirès, Gilberto, Fàbregas, Hleb; Ljungberg; Henry.

The result left Arsenal with two European honors in their men’s history: the 1970 Inter-Cities Fair Cup and the 1994 Cup Winners’ Cup. Those trophies are not recognized as major titles, which is why the club continue to fight to get their name engraved on the Champions League trophy for the first time.

Arsenal Women’s 2024–25 Season

The broader Arsenal picture has moved on since then. Arsenal Women were celebrating their place as Europe’s top team at the end of the 2024–25 season, while the men’s side are still chasing the competition’s title that slipped away in Paris. For supporters, the 2006 final remains the benchmark and the reminder of how close the club has come without finishing the job.
