Wenger Led Arsenal to 2006 Champions League Final Run

Arsenal’s last run to the 2006 champions league final came under Arsène Wenger, when they became the first London team to reach that stage. It remains the club’s clearest marker in Europe: Arsenal are still chasing their first Champions League trophy.

Wenger’s 2006 route

Wenger’s side reached the final without conceding a single goal against Real Madrid, Juventus and Villarreal. That run carried Arsenal into their only Champions League final, with Barcelona waiting at Stade de France.

Arsenal’s lineup that day read Lehmann; Eboué, Touré, Campbell, Cole; Pirès, Gilberto, Fàbregas, Hleb; Ljungberg; Henry. It was a side built to survive pressure, and the clean sheet streak through three teams was the spine of the campaign.

Barcelona at Stade de France

Barcelona arrived with Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto’o and Deco in the starting lineup, while Xavi and Andrés Iniesta were on the bench. Lionel Messi was in his first season as a starter for Barcelona, but a season-ending hamstring injury kept him out beyond the round of 16.

That final also closed the gap between Arsenal’s European record and the level they have been trying to reach ever since. The club’s men have two European honors, the 1970 Inter-Cities Fair Cup and the 1994 Cup Winners’ Cup, but neither is recognized as a major title.

Arsenal and the wait

Arsenal Women ended the 2024–25 season as Europe’s top team, a sharp contrast to the men’s long wait at the Champions League level. For the men, 2006 remains the benchmark: the last time they reached the final, the first time a London club got there, and the closest they have come to lifting the trophy.
