Barack Obama says Trump causes tension in Michelle marriage
barack obama said Donald Trump’s actions have created “genuine tension” in his marriage to Michelle Obama. He said the strain comes from his continued political involvement, which has pulled him back into politics “more than I would have preferred.”
Obama said Michelle wants him to ease up and spend more time with her. He added, “It does create a genuine tension in our household, and it frustrates her.”
Obama on Trump and Michelle
Obama said he has held back from attacking Trump since Trump took office in 2017, even as Trump’s actions have pushed him back into the role of a leading Democratic voice. He said no other ex-president was the main surrogate for a party for four election cycles after leaving office.
That backdrop has kept him active on campaign trails across the country and in gerrymandering fights. Obama also urged voters in Virginia to approve a new redistricting plan that could give Democrats four additional House seats.
Trump attacks and Obama response
Obama said Trump posted a fake video of him being arrested and later shared a racist video on Truth Social depicting him and Michelle Obama as apes. He said, “There doesn’t seem to be any shame about this among people who used to feel like you had to have some sort of decorum and a sense of propriety and respect for the office.”
He said he is more forgiving of the situation because he understands why people feel that way. But he also said that if he acted like Jon Stewart once a week and ripped into what was happening, he would be a commentator rather than a political leader.
Marc Maron interview last year
In an interview last year on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, Obama said there was no obvious person serving as the shadow prime minister or the leader of the Democratic Party after he left office. He said, “The media environment is so difficult that people don’t even know all the stuff I am doing, right?”
That leaves him in a familiar position: active in politics, but trying to limit how often he becomes the party’s public answer to Trump. For Michelle Obama, he said, the cost is simpler and more personal — more time at home, less time on the road, and less of the tension he says now follows the work.
