DFES Warns on Tuesday After Fire In Perth Burned 19.5ha

A fire in perth at Herdsman Lake left more than 19.5ha burnt, and Department of Fire and Emergency Services advice to avoid the area remained in place on Tuesday morning. DFES said there was still "a lot of smoke" around the regional park after Monday’s blaze.

The warning covered Selby Street North, Walters Drive, Herdsman Parade and Moondine Drive in Glendalough, Osborne Park and Wembley. People were told to stay alert, monitor their surroundings and avoid walking trails in the warning area.

Herdsman Lake on Monday

The blaze ripped through the regional park on Monday and burned across the centre island of the lake. The lake itself helped contain the flames, but an afternoon wind change turned the fire back on itself after the fire had already spread over more than 19.5ha.

At its peak, ash from the fire was carried on the wind and spread throughout the nearby Osborne Park business district. An alert was also issued about the risk of falling embers, adding another concern for people working and moving through the area.

DFES smoke warning

DFES kept its advice in place on Tuesday morning while the smoke remained over Perth’s north. The warning area covered residential streets and business areas, with the same instruction to avoid Herdsman Lake and stay clear of walking trails.

The cause of the blaze has not been identified, and DFES said the circumstances appear suspicious. For people in Glendalough, Osborne Park and Wembley, the immediate step is simple: keep away from the warning area and keep watching for smoke and ember alerts as the day goes on.
