Eala opened fast and controlled the first set 6:0, taking a triple break at 0:1, 0:3 and 0:5. Fręch then answered in the second set, winning 6:3 after converting her third break point at 2:0.
The deciding set turned again at 3:3, when Eala broke back and then closed the match on her first match point on Fręch’s serve at 4:6. That left Fręch with a first-round defeat and a hard result to absorb after entering Rome ranked 45 WTA and trying to end a streak of five consecutive defeats.
Fręch and Eala
The match was also the first meeting between Fręch and Eala, who arrived ranked 42 WTA. The scoreline matched the gap in the rankings only in stretches; Fręch’s second-set response showed she could force a different pattern, but the finish still belonged to Eala.
Linette on Court 14
Poland’s day in Rome went the same way for Magda Linette, who lost 0:6, 3:6 to Tatiana Maria on court number 14. Linette was ranked 55 WTA, while Maria entered the match at 54 WTA, and the result closed out both Polish openers on the same day in the WTA 1000 event.
