Statistics Canada 2026 Census Fines Begin May 4, 2026

Statistics Canada began the statistics canada 2026 census fines collection cycle on May 4, 2026, and invitation letters are now being mailed to households across Canada. The 2026 census asks residents to complete a questionnaire using a unique 16-digit code from the letter.

Anyone who refuses to participate could face a fine of up to $500 under the Statistics Act. If the online questionnaire is not completed, a census employee will follow up to help complete it.

Statistics Canada census cycle

Statistics Canada conducts census data collection every five years. The 2026 cycle includes two censuses: one for households in Canada and one for farm businesses.

The Census of the Population collects information about demographics, society and economy from each household in Canada. Questions cover age, gender, marital status and language. Statistics Canada says 75 per cent of households will receive a short-form census questionnaire, while the rest will receive the long-form version.

Each invitation letter includes a unique 16-digit code that respondents use at by clicking “Start Questionnaire” and entering the code before answering the questions prepared by Statistics Canada.

The agency also offers the questionnaire in an alternate format and in 28 different languages for reference purposes. Census data is used by governments, Indigenous communities and organizations, farm organizations, businesses and others to make informed decisions.

Statistics Act penalty

The legal requirement applies to Canadian residents, including citizens, landed immigrants, refugee claimants, Canadian Foreign Service officers, Canadian Armed Forces members stationed abroad and people with work or study permits in Canada.

For households that have not yet returned the online questionnaire, the mailed letter is the first step. The code on that letter is the key item to keep close, because it opens the questionnaire and starts the process before any follow-up from a census employee.
