Alert Ready Canada Test set for May 6, Ontario on May 7
Canada’s alert ready canada test will reach most provinces and territories on May 6, 2026, when Canadians can expect one test message on television, radio and compatible wireless devices. Ontario will get its alert on May 7, giving residents there a separate test day during Emergency Preparedness Week.
The message will begin with the Canadian Alert Attention Signal and state that it is a test with no action required. For people in participating provinces and territories, the test is the clearest annual check of how the system reaches homes and phones through broadcasters, wireless providers and emergency management organizations.
May 6 Across Most Provinces
The test will run across most provinces and territories on May 6, 2026, as part of Emergency Preparedness Week, which runs from May 3 to May 9, 2026. Canadians will receive one test message from their provincial or territorial emergency management organization through television, radio and compatible wireless devices.
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission requires wireless service providers and broadcasters to issue at least one public test alert each year. Public test alerts are typically issued in May during Emergency Preparedness Week or in November, and each province and territory decides whether it takes part.
Ontario's May 7 Test
Ontario is the exception this year. Its test is scheduled for May 7, 2026, one day after the rest of the country’s participating provinces and territories.
Not all Canadians will receive the alert on a mobile phone, and no one can opt out of the Alert Ready system, including test alerts. The test is meant to increase public awareness of Canada’s emergency alert system, encourage preparedness conversations and give broadcasters, wireless service providers and emergency management organizations operational practice.
Emergency Preparedness Week 2026
This year’s Emergency Preparedness Week theme is Be Prepared. Know Your Risks. The campaign encourages Canadians to understand local hazards and take simple steps to stay safe, including making an emergency plan, building an emergency kit and staying informed.
For readers in participating provinces and territories, the practical takeaway is simple: expect a short alert on May 6 unless you live in Ontario, where the test comes on May 7, and do not take any action when it arrives.
