Gregor Townsend sees Chris Harris return to Newcastle Red Bulls

gregor townsend will have Chris Harris back at Newcastle Red Bulls at the end of the season, six years after he left the club in 2019. The Scotland centre is set to return to Kingston Park after spells with Gloucester and Bath, bringing 47 caps and a place in the 2021 British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa.

Chris Harris back at Kingston Park

Harris, now 35 years old, said the move felt like a return to where it started. “It’s a real full-circle moment to be heading back to Kingston Park,” he said, adding: “I am looking forward to returning to where it all started, helping to galvanise this new group of exciting players as we build for the future.”

He also said: “Newcastle is home to me, and I owe so much to this club. I can’t wait to bring my experience, on and off the field, and pull on the shirt once again.” The transfer brings him back after more than a century of appearances in his first spell with the club, before his move away in 2019.

Neil McIlroy backs midfield steel

Sporting general manager Neil McIlroy described Harris as “a top player who has proven himself at the elite end of the international and club game over many years.” He added that Harris “will add real steel and experience to a key area in our midfield,” and said the centre will help develop “the wealth of young talent we have within our ranks.”

That blend of experience and local knowledge is the point of the deal. McIlroy also said Harris is “from our area” and linked the signing to Newcastle’s aim of getting back “to the top table of domestic and European rugby.”

Bath, Gloucester and the Lions

Harris left Newcastle in 2019, joined Gloucester and later moved to Bath Rugby last summer. His resume also includes selection for the 2021 British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa, where he became a starter in the second Test. For Newcastle, the return is about replacing some of that top-level mileage with a player who already knows the club’s demands.

The move gives Newcastle a midfielder who has handled international and club pressure for years, and it lands at the end of the season rather than in the middle of a run-in. Harris has already framed it as a chance to help a new group build, while Newcastle are buying into a player whose most useful credential may be the one McIlroy named first: proven at the elite end.
