Manchester City Win Women's Super League Title After Arsenal Draw
Manchester City won the women's super league title after Arsenal were held 1-1 by Brighton in Crawley on Wednesday. It ended City's 10-year wait for the league crown and left them with one game remaining and a chance to complete a league and cup Double.
Arsenal's draw in Crawley
Arsenal needed to win all three of their remaining games to keep the title race alive, but the 1-1 draw made that impossible. City were already on 52 points before the match in Crawley, while Arsenal's maximum total was 53.
That was enough to settle the race without City playing. They moved past the line after a season in which the title had stayed live only because Arsenal had three games in hand over the leaders going into Wednesday.
Jeglertz ends City's wait
Andrée Jeglertz arrived as Manchester City manager last summer and has taken them to the championship in his first season in charge. City last won the league in 2016, then finished as runners-up six times and also ended second in the shortened Spring Series.
The title also closes the gap between City and last season, when they finished fourth and missed out on Champions League football. This time, their scoring power helped push them over the line, with Khadija Shaw leading the team on 19 goals and four assists in 21 games.
Chelsea again on Sunday
City are close to opening their new £10m facility, and the title adds more weight to a side that has turned quickly under Jeglertz. Khadija Shaw, Vivianne Miedema and Kerolin were all among the league's top six scorers this season, which gave City enough firepower to stay ahead when Arsenal could not keep pace.
They now meet Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday, with the league title still leaving the possibility of a league and cup Double. City do not have to defend the championship in the final weekend; the job was finished when Brighton held Arsenal in Crawley.
