Lake Tahoe STEM Discovery Night Returns May 8 at South Tahoe Middle School

Lake Tahoe Community College and Lake Tahoe Unified School District will bring STEM Discovery Night back to South Lake Tahoe on Friday, May 8, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The free event will take place in the multi-purpose room at South Tahoe Middle School and is open to the public.

Students in kindergarten through 12th grade and their families can move between hands-on tinkering stations, robotics demonstrations, interactive exhibits and a pop-up Discovery Museum experience. Food trucks and raffle prizes are also part of the evening, giving families a short window to sample science and technology activities in one place.

The event is in its third year and is hosted by Lake Tahoe Community College and Lake Tahoe Unified School District. The collaboration also includes LTCC’s TRiO, Hispanic Serving Institution and Dual Enrollment programs, Dr. Jamie Orr, The Marcella Foundation and LTUSD’s CTE and Science Departments.

Gladys Aguilar, director of TRiO Programs at LTCC, said the event began with a shared goal. “STEM Discovery Night started as a shared vision among many of us, to plant a seed of curiosity and a love for learning in our students and families,” she said.

Aguilar said the organizers want the evening to give the community direct access to science-focused activities. “We are incredibly proud to bring this event to our community and create a space where science, exploration, and discovery can come to life.”

For families in South Lake Tahoe, the practical details are simple: show up at South Tahoe Middle School during the 5:30 to 8 p.m. window, and the event is free. The format is built for students from kindergarten through 12th grade, so younger children and older students can take part in the same evening without separate registration details in the announcement.
