Thredbo and Falls Creek Snow in Australia Polar Blast Snow Forecast

Australia polar blast snow forecast turned real this morning as Thredbo picked up a new coat of snow and Falls Creek reported a light dusting. The Bureau of Meteorology had said parts of Victoria, Tasmania and NSW were in for wintry conditions over the coming days.

Thredbo resort said temperatures dropped to -6.4 this morning, with village rooftops dusted in white. Falls Creek followed with its own light snowfall and overnight temperatures as low as -5.6C.

Dean Narramore on cooler months

Dean Narramore, a Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist, said the cold snap was a sign of the seasonal shift. “It’s a sure sign we really are moving into the cooler months of the year,” he said.

The bureau linked the wintry conditions to a cold front and a chasing high-pressure system. That is the weather pattern now pushing snow into major ski destinations while other parts of Victoria, Tasmania and NSW remain in the same system.

Thredbo opening weekend

Thredbo also posted on Instagram that the resort was already seeing winter-like conditions ahead of opening weekend. Its post said, “Temps dropped to a chilly -6.4 this morning, the village rooftops are dusted in white and the Snow Cams are already looking very wintery ?Opening Weekend is getting closer, and Mother Nature is giving us a taste of what’s to come – let’s GO!”

For people heading to the alpine resorts, the immediate change is simple: snow is already on the ground at Thredbo and Falls Creek, and the cold has arrived before the broader ski season begins. The front has also widened the weather picture beyond the resorts, with three states flagged for wintry conditions.
