Niklas Sule Ends Career at 30 After Dortmund Contract
Niklas sule will end his professional football career when his Borussia Dortmund contract expires at the end of the season. The 30-year-old said he will step away this summer, closing out a spell that has run since his 2022 move from Bayern Munich.
Sule’s Dresden of Dortmund
He put the decision plainly on the Spielmacher podcast: "I would like to announce that I will be ending my career this summer". His comments tie the retirement to a recent injury scare and to the physical strain of another serious knee setback.
Süle said that in Hoffenheim, a drawer test in the dressing room left him fearing the worst. "What I felt when our team doctor did the drawer test in the dressing room in Hoffenheim, looked at the physio and shook his head, and the physio did it too and didn’t feel any resistance either – I went into the shower and cried for ten minutes." He added: "It’s torn".
Hoffenheim injury scare
The next day brought relief, but also a turning point. Süle said an MRI showed it was not a cruciate ligament tear after all, yet the scare changed how he thought about what came next. "When I went for an MRI the next day and received the good news (that it wasn’t a cruciate ligament tear after all), it was one thousand per cent clear to me that it was over."
He said the thought of facing another major knee problem was enough to settle the decision. "I couldn’t imagine anything worse than looking forward to life – being independent, going on holiday, spending time with my children – only to then have to come to terms with my third cruciate ligament tear."
Dortmund’s 109-game defender
Since arriving in 2022, Süle has played 109 games across all competitions for Borussia Dortmund. He said he enjoyed his four years there and described a strong bond with the club and the city. "When I look back on my four years in Dortmund, there were so many moments I really enjoyed".
He pointed to the atmosphere inside the stadium, the dressing room and the people around the club. "The banter in the dressing room, the stadium – we’re talking about 80,000 people here." He also said, "The fans always gave me a warm welcome," and added, "My children go to nursery here."
For Dortmund, the retirement announcement leaves one of its senior defenders heading toward the exit as the season ends. Süle’s contract runs out at the same point, and his departure will close the book on a four-year spell that started with his move from Bayern Munich and now ends with a decision he says is final.
