Gabe Alvarez Dismissed After Tigers HR Investigation

gabe alvarez was dismissed as the Detroit Tigers’ Triple-A manager after a human resources investigation into alleged harassment claims by a female employee. The Tigers said Tuesday that his contract had been terminated in-season because of a violation of club policy.

Tigers and Alvarez

Alvarez had been promoted to Triple-A Toledo in 2025 after managing the Tigers’ Double-A Erie affiliate for three seasons. Erie won back-to-back Eastern League titles in 2023 and 2024, which gave him a strong on-field record before the off-field complaint ended his run in Toledo.

By Wednesday night, Alvarez had addressed the incident directly. He said, “I sent a single text message to a colleague that I intended as a lighthearted joke,” and added that he quickly realized “the message was inappropriate and did not reflect the values and judgment I strive to uphold.”

He said he “immediately reached out to clarify my intent,” while also saying, “I never intended to cause discomfort or offense, and I regret that the message created this situation.” Alvarez called it “an isolated incident and not reflective of my long-standing record of professionalism, respect for colleagues, and conduct over the course of my career.”

The dismissal lands inside a broader organizational pattern. Last September, at least eight men employed by Ilitch Sports + Entertainment or its former broadcast partner had been accused of misconduct toward women since 2023, and the organization later parted ways with Peter Soto. In April 2025, assistant general manager Sam Menzin abruptly resigned after 13 years with the team.

Detroit's workplace fallout

Ryan Gustafson said in September, “Do we need to focus on continued improvement in our culture? Yes,” after saying there were no plans to involve an outside firm to assess the organization’s culture. The online employee handbook says a violation of the company’s harassment policy can bring disciplinary action, including immediate termination, and that rule now frames how the Tigers handled Alvarez’s exit.

For the Triple-A club, the change is immediate: Toledo loses its manager in season, and the Tigers have already tied the move to a club policy violation. Alvarez’s case now sits beside the earlier departures and allegations that have pushed workplace conduct inside the organization back into view.
