Mbappe Out Petition Swells as Real Madrid Clashes Mount Before Betis
Kylian Mbappe’s clash with a Real Madrid coaching staff member before the April 24 trip to Real Betis has added fresh strain to a dressing room already under pressure, with the mbappe out petition mood still hanging over the club. The flare-up came amid a run of internal flashpoints that has unsettled the atmosphere since last month’s Champions League elimination by Bayern Munich.
The dispute centered on a training exercise in which the staff member was acting as an assistant referee on the sideline and called Mbappe offside. Sources said the forward spoke angrily and in insulting terms toward him, a reaction that did not go down well with many around Madrid.
Mbappe and the sideline call
Mbappe’s exchange with the coach was not an isolated moment. Antonio Rudiger was involved in a heated argument with another first-team player in April at Real Madrid’s training ground, and several sources said Rudiger instigated that confrontation before later apologising.
The coach involved in Mbappe’s dispute was on the sideline in a support role, not in the middle of a match, which made the reaction stand out inside a squad already dealing with noise from several directions. People close to the club criticised Mbappe and Madrid for not taking a firmer stance after the flare-up.
Real Madrid’s April pressure
The wider picture has not helped. Real Madrid’s mood has been worse since Bayern Munich ended their Champions League run last month, and Mbappe has also faced internal criticism over a trip to Italy with his partner. Those issues have fed the feeling that the club’s senior players are being judged as much for conduct as for results.
Rudiger tried to reset the mood by inviting his team-mates and their families to lunch on Friday, a gesture that came after the April argument in the dressing rooms. There is no suggestion that either Rudiger or Mbappe has faced internal punishment, but the line inside the club has already shifted from isolated incidents to repeated friction.
Arbeloa answers on Sunday
Mbappe is now recovering from the hamstring injury he suffered at Betis on April 24, after being given some days off last week. He returned to the Spanish capital on Sunday evening shortly before kickoff at Espanyol, where Vinicius Jr’s two goals settled a 2-0 win.
Arbeloa was asked about Mbappe on three occasions in his post-match press conference, and he drew a clear line around the player’s private time: “In their free time, each player does what they see fit, and I don't get involved in that,” he said. That response leaves Madrid still managing the same problem — a team trying to move on while its biggest names keep pulling attention back to the dressing room.
