Mark Cuban Joins Brampton Honey Badgers Ownership Group

Mark Cuban has reportedly joined the brampton honey badgers ownership group, adding a former NBA owner with deep league ties to the Canadian Elite Basketball League franchise. The move gives Brampton a high-profile name as the team enters its eighth season overall and fourth in Brampton.

Whitley Reveals Cuban Move

Al Whitley disclosed the investment during a Brampton city council meeting on Wednesday. Whitley spent 22 years inside the Mavericks organization and worked closely with Cuban, including during Dallas' 2011 NBA championship run, before taking over leadership of the Honey Badgers.

Leonard Asper is also part of the team's ownership group, and he already has a business connection with Cuban through Anthem Sports & Entertainment. The team has not disclosed Cuban's role, but it is expected to formally announce it on May 7.

Honey Badgers Enter Eighth Season

The timing lands as the Honey Badgers prepare for a season that runs from May through August. They are one of the Canadian Elite Basketball League's original six franchises, and the league now includes 10 teams.

Cuban sold his 73 per cent stake in the Dallas Mavericks in 2023 for $3.5 billion after 23 years as majority owner. His move into Brampton links a former NBA owner with a Canadian team that has already shifted markets once, moving from Hamilton before settling in Brampton for its fourth season there.

For the Honey Badgers, the practical next step is the formal announcement on May 7, when the team is expected to put Cuban's role on the record. For Brampton, the arrival of a name tied to the Mavericks, Shark Tank and one of the NBA's recent title runs gives the franchise a louder national profile before the CEBL season opens.
