Johan Manzambi plays all 13 Freiburg Europa League games

johan manzambi has played in all 13 of SC Freiburg’s Europa League games, and the 20-year-old has turned that run into one goal and two assists. His advisor Michel Urscheler says the sky is the limit after another strong European campaign from the midfielder.

Manzambi and Freiburg’s Europa League run

Freiburg went into Thursday evening’s second leg against Braga trailing 0-1 from the first leg. The club wanted to reach the Europa League final for the first time, and Manzambi was part of every step of that push.

He has not just been present. In the current competition, he has delivered one goal and two assists while staying in the side for all 13 matches. For a player who is still only 20, that kind of usage tells the story of how quickly he has become central to Freiburg’s European campaign.

Urscheler on Manzambi’s growth

Urscheler described him as “Johan is a very sensitive but determined person” and added, “When he sets his mind to something, he doesn't let himself be dissuaded.” He pointed to a restaurant episode six months after Manzambi arrived in Freiburg, when he ordered everything in German, saying, “Something that describes his ambition well is the fact that he ordered everything in German in a restaurant just six months after arriving in Freiburg. This curiosity and desire to learn more is what makes Johan special.”

He also highlighted what makes the midfielder difficult to pin down on the pitch: “He is very creative, which is why he stands out from the crowd. He is very unpredictable and can play in different positions. His versatility is worth its weight in gold.”

Schweinsteiger backs the ceiling

Bastian Schweinsteiger offered the bluntest assessment of Manzambi’s game. “He knows what to do on every square meter of the pitch. Manzambi is an all-rounder. He can run a lot, he's technically very good, he can dribble, he can score goals.”

That mix of traits has already put him in rumors linking him with top European clubs, including Real Madrid. Urscheler urged patience on that front: “You can't rush things. You have to take things as they come and not get too distracted by all the background noise.”

The same profile has also led to talk of a future with Switzerland at the World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada next summer. For Freiburg, though, the immediate marker is simpler: a 20-year-old who has played every Europa League game and kept producing in a season built around the club’s first push to that final.
