Sally Field Anchors Remarkably Bright Creatures on Netflix

Sally Field leads remarkably bright creatures on Netflix as Tova, a cleaner at an aquarium in a picturesque coastal town who keeps to herself after her son’s death. The adaptation of Shelby Van Pelt’s best-selling novel gives Field a lead role for the first time since 2015’s Hello, My Name is Doris.

Field and Molina

Marcellus, the elderly octopus voiced by Alfred Molina, hates humans but takes to Tova because she talks to him in detail about her life. That setup turns the film into a quiet two-hander even though one of the leads has eight arms and a deep dislike of people.

Olivia Newman directs the movie, which follows the book’s 2022 run from best seller to streamer adaptation. The material also fits the lane Netflix has carved out for gentle originals aimed at older viewers, where a modest tone can be a selling point rather than a limitation.

Grief at the Aquarium

Tova’s story does not stay inside the tank. After injuring her foot, she has to answer calls from the head of a retirement community where her late husband had reserved space for them, while she also struggles to connect with people around her. The film uses that pressure to keep the focus on routine, grief and the small negotiations of daily life.

Lewis Pullman plays Cameron, a wannabe rocker who starts working alongside Tova. They clash at first, then become friends after realizing they share grief and a sense of being unmoored, which gives the film its clearest human counterweight to the octopus material.

Netflix's Older-Audience Lane

The release arrives with a straightforward business signal: Netflix has put a recognizable adult lead, a best-selling book and a gently paced drama into the same package. That is the kind of project built for viewers who want a low-friction evening watch rather than a high-concept series commitment.

Field’s return to a lead role after 2015 is the sharpest headline here, but the better reason to watch is the fit between performer and material. She gets a part with room for stillness, and the film seems designed to let that stillness do some of the work.
