Charlotte Macinnes trial closes with Rebel Wilson liar claim

charlotte macinnes ended Friday in a Sydney courtroom with Rebel Wilson accused of making up allegations about her and Amanda Ghost. Sue Chrysanthou told the judge Wilson was a “fantastical liar” who had rewritten what happened around The Deb. Justice Elizabeth Raper said she will now consider her verdict.

The defamation case turns on whether Wilson wrongfully said MacInnes had made a sexual harassment complaint against Ghost. MacInnes is the lead actress in The Deb and is suing Wilson over what she says damaged her reputation.

According to Wilson’s account, MacInnes and Ghost shared a bath in swimsuits in September 2023, and MacInnes later said it made her uncomfortable. That account sits at the center of the dispute now before Raper.

Chrysanthou’s closing submission

Chrysanthou told the Sydney court Wilson’s account was a “complete revision of history” and said she had made up “terrible, terrible allegations about other people.” She also said MacInnes had suffered harm because of the events on The Deb and now lived in fear of Wilson.

Wilson’s barrister, Dauid Sibtain, rejected that reading. He said the idea that Wilson would invent an allegation against her own lead actress was “preposterous,” that MacInnes had given “no good reason” for her position, and that the claim made “no sense.”

Wilson’s defence on MacInnes

Sibtain argued MacInnes’ career had gone “stratospheric” after she walked back the alleged complaint against Ghost. He pointed to her casting in a Ghost-produced Gatsby stage show and to a record deal with Warner Music.

Those competing versions now sit with Raper, who will decide whether Wilson’s remarks crossed the line in a dispute tied to her directorial debut. For MacInnes, the ruling will determine whether the court accepts that Wilson’s comments about her and Ghost were defamatory.
