Alphonso Davies Set for 4-5 Week Absence With Left Hamstring Injury

alphonso davies will miss four to five weeks with a left hamstring injury, and that timeline leaves his status for Canada’s opening World Cup matches in doubt. Bayern Munich said the setback came after he went down in the 86th minute of Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Paris Saint Germain.

Davies Left Late Against Paris Saint Germain

Davies was hurt on a run down the left wing and now faces a recovery window that runs directly into Canada’s World Cup buildup. Canada opens against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12, then plays Qatar in Vancouver on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24.

That schedule gives him little margin. By the time Bayern’s estimate expires, Canada will be deep into the portion of the tournament that usually sets the tone for the group stage, and Davies’ availability for that stretch is very much in doubt.

Canada Soccer and Bayern

Canada Soccer said it will work with Bayern Munich on Davies’ recovery and stay in close contact with both him and the club’s medical team. It also said it will provide specialized soft tissue expertise to support his return to full fitness ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

“We’re in close contact with Alphonso and remain in touch with Bayern’s medical team following his recent setback,” Canada Soccer said in a statement provided to TSN. “Our focus is on supporting his recovery and providing every available resource, including specialized soft tissue expertise, to give him the best possible pathway back to full fitness ahead of the FIFA World Cup.”

Canada’s Left Side Options

The injury lands after a difficult run for the Canada captain. He missed nine months recovering from an ACL injury to his right knee in March 2025, returned to Bayern in mid-December, tore a muscle fiber in his right hamstring by the end of February, came back just over two weeks later, and then suffered a hamstring strain in his first game back before returning at the beginning of April.

Since that most recent return, Davies has made nine appearances across all competitions, started four times and not played more than 62 minutes in a match. Canada has already leaned on Richie Laryea, Ali Ahmed, Liam Millar, Junior Hoilett and Marcelo Flores on the left side during his absences, and Jesse Marsch still has until June 1 to finalize his roster.

The larger problem is the same one Canada has faced before with its captain. Davies also missed seven months and Canada’s final six 2022 World Cup qualifiers in late 2021 because of myocarditis, so this latest setback comes with a familiar concern: the team can survive short stretches without him, but the countdown to June 12 is now working against its best left-sided player.
