Leeds City Council urges 36 councillors vote before Friday count

leeds city council voting took place on Thursday 7 May, with polling stations across the city open from 7am to 10pm and 36 councillors up for election. The count was due on Friday 8 May at the John Charles Centre for Sport.

Returning Officer and chief executive Ed Whiting urged registered voters to take part and said people voting in person must bring accepted photo ID. He said: "Election day is here on Thursday so we would encourage everyone registered to get involved and have their say."

Whiting's polling station warning

Whiting also warned that voters without accepted photo ID would not be allowed to vote at a polling station. He said: "For everyone intending to vote in person at a polling station please remember to take an accepted form of photo ID with you, as without it you will not be allowed to vote."

He added that postal voters who had not yet received their packs should contact the council urgently, and reminded voters that a ballot belongs to them alone. Postal votes could be handed in only at a polling station or at the electoral services office at Leeds Civic Hall, LS1 1UR.

Leeds ward seats

The contest covered one councillor in each of 33 ward areas across Leeds, with further seats in Adel and Wharfedale, Morley North and Temple Newsam. In those three wards, the winner and the second-placed candidate were to secure places on the council, making the final count more complex than a straight one-seat race in each area.

Replacement postal ballot packs could be issued up to 5pm on polling day. Results were to be posted on the council’s website and on X at @LeedsCC_News after the count at the John Charles Centre for Sport, giving voters a single point for the declared outcome.

Whiting said: "We look forward to election day in Leeds followed by the count and results on Friday." For voters who had not yet cast a ballot, the practical step was straightforward: vote before the 10pm close, bring accepted photo ID if voting in person, and use only the approved channels for any postal vote.
