Stephen Flynn wins 12,969 as Gethins takes Dundee City East
Stephen Gethins won Dundee City East with 12,969 votes, taking 49% of the contest and putting stephen flynn at the center of an election result that changes representation in both Holyrood and Westminster. The SNP held the seat, and Gethins is set to enter Holyrood after replacing finance secretary Shona Robison.
Dundee City East vote
Gethins won by 8,177 votes. Scottish Labour's Cheryl-Ann Cruickshank finished second with 4,792 votes, Reform UK's Mark Simpson took 4,135, the Liberal Democrats' Tanvir Ahmad won 2,086, and the Conservatives' Jack Cruickshanks won 1,999. Turnout in the Dundee City East contest was 46.7%.
After the result, Gethins said he was replacing Robison and added, "truly has big shoes to fill". He also said, "My family came to the city as immigrants over 100 years ago. And this city, like this country, are at our best when we're outward looking, when we're diverse."
Arbroath and Broughty Ferry
The Dundee City East win has an immediate effect beyond Holyrood because Gethins will vacate his Westminster seat in Arbroath and Broughty Ferry. A by-election will be held there to choose a new MP, leaving the constituency without its current representative once he moves into the Scottish parliament.
That vacancy follows a day in which Heather Anderson was elected as SNP MSP for Dundee City West earlier on Friday. Gethins thanked Anderson after her win, linking the two SNP gains in Dundee on the same day.
The result now leaves one seat to fill in Edinburgh and another to fill at Westminster, with the Arbroath and Broughty Ferry contest set once Gethins gives up the seat.
