Bedriya Adem Gives Birth to Quintuplets in Ethiopia

Bedriya Adem gave birth to quintuplets in ethiopia after 12 years of trying for a baby. The 35-year-old delivered four boys and a girl by Caesarean on Tuesday evening at Hiwot Fana Specialised Hospital in Harari Regional state.

The hospital said all five babies were in full health and weighed between 1.3kg and 1.4kg. Dr Mohammed Nur Abdulahi said, "She received regular medical care during her pregnancy and was informed that she had conceived more than one baby. She had full and proper medical assistance throughout".

Adem said, "I cannot express my happiness in words" after the birth. She also said she had felt "filled with depression and pain" until her prayers were answered, and added, "I prayed for just one child, and Allah gave me five".

The birth stood out because naturally conceived quintuplets are about one in 55 million. Abdulahi said the hospital does not offer in vitro fertilisation, and the doctor said Adem conceived naturally without IVF. The babies were initially expected to be four, not five.

Adem also said, "What I endured in the past feels like a distant dream, one I do not even want to recall". She had spent 12 years trying to have a baby, and said her inability to give birth was questioned in her village. Her husband already had a child from another marriage who lived with them.

The babies remained under medical care after delivery. Abdulahi said newborns who weigh more than a kilogram have a high chance of survival and healthy growth, placing the focus now on the five children already born in Harari Regional state.
