Ryan Giles Cross Creates Hull Chance Against Millwall
Ryan Giles sent in the ball that opened Hull City’s best early chance, and Millwall had already survived a first warning when Belloumi clipped the wrong side of the post in the 2nd minute. Hull were still pushing at 8pm BST in the Championship playoff semi-final first leg, with every opening carrying extra weight over two legs.
Belloumi Hits The Post
Belloumi drove in from the left, cut inside and shot toward the near post in the 2nd minute, only for the ball to clip the wrong side of the upright. That was the clearest early signal from Hull, who had started on the front foot before Millwall settled.
Hull had 38.8% of possession after 10 minutes, which matched the shape of the opening. Millwall were seeing more of the ball, but the sharper chance still belonged to the home side.
Giles Finds McBurnie
In the 17th minute, Giles crossed from the left and the delivery dropped in an ideal spot for McBurnie. Cooper got across in time to block the chance before it could turn into the opener.
That sequence came after Millwall’s Sturge won a free kick in the 4th minute and Azeez had a cleanly struck shot in the 14th minute that was not well aimed. Hull’s response was more dangerous: Giles put the ball into a zone that forced Millwall to react inside their box.
Millwall Withstand The Pressure
Two minutes after Giles’ cross, Cooper gave the ball away and Gelhardt surged toward the Millwall penalty area. He slipped as he tried to shoot in the 19th minute, so Hull were left with another half-chance instead of a finish.
The pattern through the opening quarter-hour was clear: Hull were creating the cleaner looks, while Millwall were being asked to defend repeated entries from the left and recover from their own loose moments. In a playoff semi-final first leg, that leaves little margin for either side.
The match was being played as part of the Championship playoff semi-final, with a place in the final at stake across two legs. Hull had already shown enough early threat to suggest the first leg could turn on one ball into the box, and Giles was the player supplying it.
