Val Garland Tells Judi Dench Concealer Should Sit Lower on Mature Skin
judi dench is one of the famous faces Val Garland has painted, and now Garland is pushing the focus lower under the eyes for mature skin. In a masterclass with Primark PS Pro Beauty, she mapped out a routine built around a satin glow, light powder and a brush-first approach to mascara.
"What I would tend to do is, I take the focus away from underneath the eyes, and I do the concealer lower." Garland said that move helps her create the kind of "satin glow from within skin" she says people with mature skin can wear every day. It is a small placement change, but it shifts the finish away from heaviness.

"When it comes to powdering, I would just powder in the middle with a very translucent, light powder," she said, adding that she stays away from the eyes and uses setting spray. Garland also warned that too much powder or foundation on mature skin will make it appear "cakey," which is the kind of mistake that turns a simple routine into a mask.
"I mean, I never spend money on mascara," Garland said, calling high street mascaras "so good." She put the real emphasis on the wand: "It's all about the brush for me when it comes to mascara, because if you've got a scratchy brush, and if you are a mature lady, chances are you haven't got as many eyelashes as you used to have."
Mascara and bronze
"So a scrubby brush isn't gonna feature," she said. Garland also said she stayed away from blush and suggested bronze for people who want to add a pop of colour. For anyone using eyeliner, her advice was simple and practical: "If you're right-handed, do the left eye first, and vice versa."
"You'll get a much more balanced line," Garland said. That is the most useful part of the lesson for readers with mature skin: keep the product light, place concealer lower, pick a softer brush, and let setting spray do the finishing work.
