Rousey to Face Carano in May 16 Ronda Rousey Fight

Ronda Rousey fight news now has a date: the 39-year-old will face Gina Carano on May 16. It puts two retired names from women’s MMA back in the same frame, with Rousey returning after a decade away and Carano last appearing nearly 17 years ago.

Rousey’s Fast Rise

Rousey built her reputation on the armbar. She won her first three amateur fights by the hold in under a minute, then turned professional in 2011 and finished her first eight pro fights the same way.

Five of those eight pro wins ended in less than a minute. That run made her the biggest crossover star the UFC had seen until Conor McGregor appeared in 2013, and it came after she had already won an Olympic bronze medal in judo in 2008.

Carano’s Return Matchup

Carano brings a different record to the meeting. She was a pioneer of women’s MMA, won seven fights in the sport, and three of those victories came by knockout.

The matchup also reaches back to a key point in Rousey’s own career. She fought Sarah Kaufman in August 2012 in the final Strikeforce women’s bout before moving on to the first women’s UFC fight, and Kaufman was her sixth professional opponent. All five of Rousey’s opponents before Kaufman had lost by armbar.

Rousey’s Last Octagon Run

The newer tension in this pairing is not just age or layoff. Rousey lost her final two Octagon appearances by knockout to Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes, a sharp contrast to the quick submissions that defined the first half of her career.

That makes May 16 less about nostalgia than about two old styles meeting again. Rousey’s judo-driven finish game and Carano’s Muay Thai background are the kind of contrast that once built women’s MMA, and now it returns with both fighters years removed from active competition.
