Emily Deschanel Pilot Key Witness Scrapped Among 4 NBC Cuts

emily deschanel’s NBC drama pilot Key Witness did not make the network’s 2026-27 schedule on Friday. The project was one of four pilots NBC passed over after developing eight for the season.

Pearlena Igbokwe said the network’s teams “delivered an exceptional pilot slate, developing eight standout projects that reflect our ambition” and added, “While we often hear the phrase embarrassment of riches, it truly applies in this case.” NBC then chose four series orders, leaving Deschanel’s project outside the lineup.

NBC’s picked-up pilots were a reboot of The Rockford Files led by David Boreanaz, the law enforcement drama Line of Fire with Peter Krause, the private eye comedy Sunset P.I. starring Jake Johnson, and one additional order that helped fill the 2026-27 TV season slate. That left Key Witness, What the Dead Know, Puzzled and Jill & Ginger on the outside.

Key Witness would have put Deschanel back in a network procedural lane, this time as Georgia Ryan, a psychologist and criminal profiler who works with the FBI and focuses on victims rather than the usual perpetrator-centered approach. It came from Dean Georgaris and John Fox.

The project now moves to the market, where it will be shopped to other networks. That gives Key Witness a second life, even after NBC chose not to use one of its four drama slots on the pilot.

The setback lands with extra weight because Deadline said the show might have made NBC’s schedule if the network had one more drama slot to fill. For Deschanel, who spent 12 seasons on Fox’s Bones as Dr. Temperance Brennan, the new pilot miss turns into a potential sale rather than a series launch.

NBC’s cut pilot slate

What the Dead Know also missed the NBC cut, with Taylor Schilling playing a medical examiner who helps the NYPD crack tough cases. There is talk of retooling it around Schilling’s character as its anchor, which keeps that project closer to a rescue than a rejection.

Puzzled, led by Damon Wayans Jr., centered on a pro sports gambler whose traumatic brain injury gives him exceptional puzzle-solving, higher math and pattern recognition. Jill & Ginger paired Jane Lynch and Katey Sagal as best friends and fellow therapists, but neither comedy made the schedule. NBC’s bet is now narrower: four pilots moved forward, four did not, and Key Witness will need another buyer to reach air.
