Brock Stewart Returns to Dodgers After 36 Games Away

brock stewart was activated by the Dodgers on Wednesday and joined the club in Houston before the series finale against the Astros at Daikin Park. He had missed the first 5 weeks of the season and 36 games while on the injured list after right shoulder debridement surgery late last September.

His return gives Los Angeles another reliever after a long absence. Stewart worked through eight rehab games and covered 6 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out 13 of 27 batters faced while allowing four hits, three walks and one hit batter.

Stewart's Rehab Work

The right-hander threw 112 pitches in those 6 1/3 innings, a workload that helped finish his ramp-up before he rejoined the Dodgers. In six games for the Comets, he averaged 95.5 mph on his four-seam fastball and 94.8 mph on his sinker, numbers that point to a pitcher who came back with his velocity intact.

Stewart was one of 10 Dodgers to open the season on the injured list, and he did not pitch during spring training. He needed a three-week build-up in the minors before the club brought him back to the active roster.

Jake Eder Moves Out

Jake Eder was optioned to Triple-A to make room for Stewart. Eder had allowed one run in four innings with the Dodgers and earned his first major league win on Monday against the Miami Marlins at Dodger Stadium.

That turn came after he was acquired from the Washington Nationals for cash consideration on April 1 and recalled on April 20 when Edwin Díaz was placed on the injured list. Last Tuesday, Eder said, "As a starter, you’ve got your day that you’re pitching, and you’ve got four or five days in between, and have it scheduled out, have a program," and, "I’m still getting used to [relief] but I’m basically just doing whatever I can before the game to be ready every night."

Dodgers Bullpen Depth

Stewart's arrival leaves the Dodgers with a reliever who missed 36 games but returned after handling rehab work over eight games and finishing with 23 swinging strikes. Eder goes back to Triple-A after a brief run in the majors, and the roster move gives the Dodgers a fresh bullpen arm for the series finale in Houston.
