Patrick Bailey Sits Again as Giants Test Catcher Mix
patrick bailey has not started in three straight games, and the Giants are using Eric Haase and Jesús Rodríguez while they search for more offense behind the plate. Bailey, a two-time Gold Glove winner, has value at catcher, but the lineup change points to a tighter grip on his playing time.
Haase and Rodríguez in the mix
Haase started on Sunday, and Rodríguez has started the past two games. Those are the catchers the Giants have turned to while Bailey sits, with the club seemingly exploring other options on the roster.
Haase brings a.725 OPS against left-handed pitchers across his nine-year career, which gives the Giants a specific matchup reason to keep him involved. Rodríguez offers a different tradeoff: the Giants like his bat, but they also recognize that his defense behind the plate is a work in progress.
Bailey's offensive slump
The shift is more than a routine rotation. Bailey has brought value at catcher, but he has slumped badly for nearly two years and has not produced at all this season. For a team desperate to get more out of the lineup, catcher is one of the few spots the Giants can tinker with to try to generate offense.
That leaves Bailey in a harder spot than a simple day off. Giving Rodríguez the nod over him can be read as a sign that his hold on a roster spot is getting increasingly tenuous, especially with the Giants already leaning on long-term deals for nearly half their lineup.
Giants lineup pressure
Rafael Devers, Matt Chapman, Willy Adames and Jung Hoo Lee were among the players under those long-term deals, yet the production picture has not matched the commitment in 2026. Devers, Chapman and Adames have been disappointments so far, and Lee has cooled off recently.
Daniel Susac had provided a spark before landing on the injured list, another reason the Giants have kept cycling through catching looks. Bailey's next chance to push back will come only if the club decides the bat or the glove needs to tilt back in his direction, and right now the staff is clearly testing the alternatives first.
