Jay Vine Hospitalised After Giro d'Italia Second-Stage Crash
jay vine was taken to hospital after a mass crash on the second stage of the Giro d'Italia, ending his race before the final climb on the hilly, rain-soaked road from Burgas to Veliko Tarnovo. The Australian UAE Team Emirates rider was one of nearly 20 riders caught in the accident, and Marc Soler also ended up in hospital.
Vine Taken Away On A Stretcher
Vine was taken away on a stretcher and put into the back of an ambulance after taking a heavy spill on a wet turn. The crash came in conditions that had already made the roads dangerous, and UAE boss Mauro Gianetti said, “We were scared because we knew that the weather and the rain would make the roads very dangerous.”
“And this happened.” Gianetti said after the stage. He added, “We have two riders, Jay Vine and Marc Soler, on the way to hospital.”
UAE Team Emirates Takes A Hit
The loss matters because Vine had entered the race in search of a reset after another heavy crash at the Tour of Catalunya in March. His recent run has been lined by bad falls: a dreadful back-breaking crash in the Tour of the Basque Country in 2024, then the March spill, then this one on the Giro’s second stage.
Gianetti said, “We just hope it's nothing too bad.” He also said, “Nothing is clear about their conditions for the moment.” The team’s immediate concern is straightforward: two riders left the stage for hospital, and one of them was the team leader Adam Yates, who finished nearly 14 minutes behind Guillermo Thomas Silva.
Silva Wins After The Neutralisation
The race was temporarily neutralised after the crash, then resumed with 18.2km left. Jonas Vingegaard attacked when racing picked up again, but XDS Astana rider Guillermo Thomas Silva prevailed in a photo finish from Florian Stork and Giulio Ciccone.
Silva became the first ever Uruguayan winner in a grand tour. For UAE Team Emirates, though, the stage was a clear setback: one rider in hospital, another teammate in hospital, and a team leader losing nearly 14 minutes on the road.
