Michael Chandler Makes June 14 Gaffe Before UFC Freedom 250
Michael Chandler turned a UFC Freedom 250 press conference into a date blunder when he said he would be competing on “America’s birthday.” The event is scheduled for June 14, not July 4, and the slip quickly drew social media ridicule. Chandler is set to face Mauricio Ruffy on the South Lawn.
Chandler and Ruffy at Prudential Center
Thursday’s face-off at Prudential Center was supposed to build toward UFC 328 ceremonial weigh-ins, but Chandler’s line became the moment people remembered. He made the comment while facing Ruffy, and the error landed immediately because June 14 is Flag Day and the birthday of Donald Trump, not Independence Day.
Dana White stepped in after Ruffy pressed a clenched fist against Chandler’s chin during the staredown. White broke it up with, “Hey! Whoa! Face forward, boys,” while the pair were still on stage.
UFC Freedom 250 on June 14
The backdrop for the mistake was no small card. The historic UFC event on the South Lawn is scheduled for June 14 and includes two title bouts, with Ilia Topuria meeting Justin Gaethje in a lightweight title unification clash and Alex Pereira facing Ciryl Gane for an interim heavyweight championship.
Other fighters were on hand too, including Josh Hokit, who was carried off stage by UFC security personnel during the event. Ilia Topuria, Alex Pereira, Justin Gaethje, Sean Strickland and Khamzat Chimaev were among the names around the presser, which added to the noise around an already crowded UFC week.
Social Reaction Around Chandler
The reaction moved fast once Chandler misspoke. One X user wrote, “Did Michael Chandler say he's going to win on America's birthday”, and another posted, “Can someone please let Michael Chandler know that America’s birthday is July 4th, not June 14th.”
For Chandler, the damage was not in the venue or the format. It was public, it was simple, and it came before the fight even started. He still has Mauricio Ruffy ahead of him on June 14, but the line from the press conference already traveled farther than the staredown itself.
