Iran Threatens US Sites in Middle East — Latest On Iran War Today

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards threatened on Saturday to strike US sites in the Middle East if Iranian tankers are attacked, the latest on iran war today after a flare-up at sea that already drew in the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz. The warning follows a day of direct naval action against two Iranian tankers and a fresh report of a small ship fire off Qatar.

The Guards said: “Any attack on Iranian tankers and commercial vessels will result in a heavy attack on one of the American centres in the region and enemy ships.” That threat was reported one day after a US fighter jet fired on and disabled two Iranian-flagged tankers in the Gulf of Oman, which Washington accused of challenging its blockade of Iran’s ports.

Gulf of Oman tankers

The Friday incident in the Gulf of Oman put commercial shipping back at the center of the confrontation. An Iranian military official told local media that the navy had responded with strikes, while the flare-up the night before took place in the Strait of Hormuz. Those events gave Tehran a direct trigger for the new warning and raised the risk to vessels moving through the same routes.

On Sunday morning, the UK Maritime Trade Operations centre said a ship caught fire after being hit by an unknown projectile off the coast of Qatar. The fire on the bulk carrier was small and was extinguished, and the ship was 23 nautical miles north-east of Doha, or 43 km away. That report adds a second maritime incident to a sequence already involving tankers, projectiles, and military warnings.

Trump and Araghchi

Donald Trump said on Friday that he was expecting Iran’s answer to Washington’s latest proposal for a peace deal supposedly tonight. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson said the proposal was still under review, and Abbas Araghchi questioned the reliability of US leadership in a call with his Turkish counterpart, according to Iran’s ISNA news agency.

Araghchi said: “The recent escalation of tensions by American forces in the Persian Gulf and their numerous actions in violating the ceasefire have added to suspicions about the motivation and seriousness of the American side in the path of diplomacy.” Washington has sent Iran, via Pakistani mediators, a proposal to extend the truce in the Gulf so talks can continue on a final settlement of the conflict launched 10 weeks ago with US-Israeli strikes on Iran.

Qatar meetings

The diplomatic track continued in Qatar while the maritime warnings spread. Marco Rubio met with Qatar’s leader, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, on Saturday, and Al Thani had met US vice-president JD Vance the previous day. Iran has attacked sites in Qatar during the war, pointing to Qatar’s role as host of a major US airbase.

The next pressure point is whether Tehran sends its answer on the US proposal and whether the Gulf shipping corridor sees another incident after the attack off Qatar. For crews, insurers, and commanders moving through these waters, the immediate question is whether the warning about US sites turns into action or stays at the level of a threat tied to tanker strikes.
