Toronto moves 15-kilometre DVP closure to Friday night — Road Closures Toronto

Toronto will shut the Don Valley Parkway for road closures toronto from Friday at 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. Monday, closing the 15-kilometre stretch from Highway 401 to the Gardiner Expressway's Jarvis Street ramp. The city is bundling maintenance, resurfacing and related work into the same weekend closure.

Andrew Posluns, the city’s chief congestion officer, said the timing was chosen to avoid overlapping north-south transit closures on GO and TTC, along with highway work and events such as the Toronto Marathon last weekend. He said: "This weekend was carefully selected to avoid concurrent closures on our north-south transit routes on GO and TTC, as well as concurrent highway work and events such as the Toronto Marathon last weekend,"

Crews will work on the Eastern Avenue bridge rehabilitation and the Bayview-Bloor ramp while the DVP is closed. The city said the work also includes pothole repairs, guard rail inspections and replacements, repainting lane markings, removing loose concrete, graffiti and litter, and clearing catch basins to reduce flooding risk.

The closure is part of a broader maintenance plan the city says is meant to save drivers up to 150 hours of disruption by bundling 30 nights of lane closures together. Toronto has tied the work to preparation for major events, including the FIFA World Cup that the city is set to host in June and July.

Toronto FC and Sporting Life 10K

The same weekend brings two other downtown pressures. About 45,000 people are expected at the Toronto FC match against Inter Miami at 1 p.m. on Saturday, and the Sporting Life 10K run on Sunday will send participants through downtown Toronto.

Some downtown roads, including sections of Bayview Avenue, Yonge Street and Front Street, will close between 4 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday for the run. Those closures come on top of the DVP shutdown, narrowing options for drivers moving through the core.

Toronto weather and rescheduling

The DVP closure had already been pushed back several times. The city first set it for Oct. 3 to 5, then moved it to Nov. 7 to 9, and later postponed repairs again because of rain after the revised dates were cancelled by heavy snowfall.

Toronto says the work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled if rain interferes again. For drivers, the practical step is to leave extra time and use public transit where possible before the weekend closure begins.
