Chris Wright Says Open to Gas Tax Suspension as Prices Soar

Chris Wright said the Trump administration is open to all ideas, including suspending the gas tax, as gas prices soar. He made the remarks on May 10, 2026, during an interview on Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.

Wright did not limit the response to fuel policy. In the same interview, he said he was not aware of a reply from Iran to President Trump, but expected one very soon.

Gas Tax Debate on Face the Nation

The secretary’s comments came as questions about a federal gas tax suspension sharpened around rising prices. Wright said the administration was open to all ideas amid those calls, but he did not announce a decision or describe any timetable for action.

For motorists, that leaves the administration in a review posture rather than an action stage. The only stated position Wright gave was that no option was off the table.

Iran and Enriched Uranium

Wright also said the United States had achieved the military objectives it had set out to reach in about five weeks. He said the ending of Iran’s nuclear program still needed to be achieved.

He said Iran had nearly 1000 pounds of uranium enriched to 60%, which he described as close to weapons grade and far above any commercial use. Wright also said it was not yet determined how that material would be handled, though he said people from the Department of Energy could be involved.

Department of Energy Role

Wright said the nuclear expertise in the United States is within the Department of Energy, and that department officials had been monitoring what was happening in Iran. He said, “We don't know. That's what- that's what's still yet to be determined.”

That leaves the immediate policy question on gas taxes simple: Wright opened the door, but the administration has not taken the next step. On Iran, he said the uranium stockpile and its handling still require a decision, with Energy Department involvement on the table.
