Ryan Lester Thrives After Luke Hodge’s Half-Back Call
Ryan Lester's move to a permanent half-back role has revived his Brisbane career, and Chris Fagan says Luke Hodge helped point the Lions in that direction. The 33-year-old veteran responded with one of Brisbane's best displays against Carlton on Friday night, turning a long stretch on the fringes into a regular first-choice spot.
Luke Hodge’s Half-Back Call
Fagan said Hodge had kept pushing the idea that Lester belonged behind the ball, and the coach eventually moved him there full time. "Luke Hodge kept saying to me, ‘I reckon he’s a good half-back flanker, folks.’"
That change has done more than settle one position. Fagan said, "His career’s blossomed from that point in time." Lester, who was drafted in 2010 and debuted in 2011, had spent years on the fringes before becoming a highly respected member of the team.
Brisbane v Carlton On Friday Night
Against Carlton, Lester delivered the kind of performance that fits the role. He had 20 disposals at 95 per cent efficiency and took a game-high 11 marks, and Fagan said he could easily have won the Robert Walls Medal.
Lachie Neale took the medal instead, but Lester's numbers stood out across the field. He was one of Brisbane's best players on the night, and Fagan summed up his value after the game: "He’s just so reliable, such a team-orientated man. It’s a credit to him."
Ryan Lester’s Long Road
The turnaround carries extra weight because Lester has had to keep earning his place. Since 2019, he has received only one-year contracts from the Lions, yet he has still built a career that now includes two premierships and 242 games.
Abbey Holmes called the transformation one of the great stories in the AFL, and the label fits the facts on the ground. A player who once lived near the edge of the lineup is now being trusted in a permanent role that has brought out the best in him.
