Gout Gout Runs 20.04 to Set Australian 200-Meter Record

gout gout ran the 200-meter dash in 20.04 seconds and set the fastest time in Australian history. The 18-year-old also broke a mark that had stood since the 1968 Olympics, and his run reset the world age-group record in the event.

Gout Gout’s 20.04 Seconds

The race turned on the first steps. Gout said, “My first couple steps I had a good start.” He added, “And if I have a good start, you know, it's kinda over,” then pointed to the part of his race that closes the gap fast: “'Cause my top-end speed is great.”

That speed showed up over the final stretch. He said, “And once I get into top-end speed, I'm flying.” The 20.04-second time made him the fastest Australian ever at 200 meters, and it also moved past the previous world age-group record set in 2003 by Usain Bolt.

Jon Wertheim pressed the point after the race, telling Gout he had “basically became the fastest 16-year-old in history.” The runner answered with a view of why the event fits him so cleanly: “Running just feeds that, I guess, inner child in me that wants to, you know, kind of feel free.” He also said, “Like, running, makes me feel like myself, for sure.”

He tied that feeling to purpose. “Yeah, this is what I was pretty much put onto this Earth to do, and that's what I'm doing,” he said. The 2028 Olympics will be in Los Angeles, and the run puts him into the conversation as a possible medal threat there, with Brisbane due to host the 2032 Summer Games after that.

Los Angeles 2028

That prospect is sharpened by age. Gout is only 18, which leaves room for the times to move again before Los Angeles. He also pointed to Brisbane with a line that fits the scale of where he grew up: “We're in Brisbane, you know? Like, this is home. The place I grew up...”

For now, the hard number is 20.04. It is the new Australian standard in the 200 meters, and it gives the next Olympic cycle a new sprint name to watch.
