Army soldier dies at Jervis Bay parachute training course

An army soldier died during a parachuting training course at jervis bay airfield on Monday evening. Another Australian army soldier was injured in the same incident and did not require hospitalisation. Defence announced the death on Tuesday.

Mark Butler

Mark Butler called Monday's death a "very deep tragedy". The incident adds to a string of recent military training deaths cited in the record, including the death of ADF soldier Jack Fitzgibbon during a parachute incident in early 2024.

Jervis Bay airfield

Fitzgibbon was injured in March 2024 at the RAAF airbase at Richmond, about 50km north-west of Sydney's CBD, and later died from his injuries after receiving first aid at the scene and being taken to Westmead hospital in a serious condition. The Jervis Bay death was the second such death in two years, according to the source.

North Queensland training accident

The record also points to another training accident in north Queensland in October 2025, when another army soldier died and two others were injured. The soldier was fatally injured in a vehicle rollover at the Townsville Field Training Area.
