Brenda Locke Demands Review After Surrey Shooting Kills 2 Teens

Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke criticized the dismantling of a specialist gang unit after the surrey shooting that left two teenage boys dead late Sunday in an underground parking lot in the 7000 block of 133B Street. Surrey Police Service officers found two males with gunshot wounds at about 10:02 p.m. and gave medical assistance until paramedics arrived.

Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. IHIT said they were Surrey residents, aged 18 and 16, and investigators believe the shooting was targeted and linked to the B.C. gang conflict.

Locke on Surrey Police

Locke said Surrey has “always invested heavily in anti-gang messaging and fully staffed a specialist gang unit,” adding that “This was recently discontinued by the chief of police.” She wrote to Surrey Police Board chair Harley Chappell calling for an immediate review of the decision to redeploy members of the gang unit.

She also said, “It is critical that Surrey Police Service has the right plan in place to combat gang violence, particularly at a time when the city is experiencing heightened levels of gang-related incidents.” Her criticism links the police reorganization directly to a stretch of shootings that, by her account, has left three people dead and two others in critical condition.

IHIT Investigation

IHIT said a vehicle fire was reported shortly after the shooting near 144 Street and 84 Avenue, and police recovered a burnt grey four-door sedan believed to be involved in the homicide. Investigators are working to identify the occupants who fled.

The team also asked for dashcam footage from the 7000 block of 133B Street or the area of 144 Street and 84 Avenue between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. on May 10. Sgt. Freda Fong said, “This shooting has left two families grieving the loss of young lives taken far too soon.”

Dashcam Request

Fong said, “Extensive work is underway as investigators pursue all available leads to identify and hold those responsible accountable.” IHIT said there have been no arrests and no suspect information has been released.

Anyone with footage from those areas during that time window was asked to call 1-877-551-4448. For families in Surrey, the immediate effect is already plain: police are treating the case as targeted, while city leaders are now pressing over whether the current gang-response setup is the right one for the violence they say is unfolding.
