Johnny Russell Starts for Dundee United in Aberdeen Vs St. Mirren

Johnny Russell started up top for Dundee United against St Mirren, and that made aberdeen vs st. mirren a lineup story before the match itself settled into place. It was his first start for the club since May 2013, a gap that stretched almost 12 years.

Russell Returns Up Top

Russell was named in Dundee United’s starting line-up alongside Richards, Bert Esselink, Graham, Sam Cleall-Harding, Strain, Sevelj, Panutche Camara, Ferry, Farrugia and Zac Sapsford. He led the line with a starting role he had not taken for the club since May 2013.

The changes did not stop there. Esselink came into a back three and made his first start since January, while Camara replaced Emmanuel Agyei after the midfielder was suspended. Dario Naamo also picked up an injury, and Sapsford returned to the line-up.

Dundee United Changes

The bench showed how much reshaping Dundee United had to do. Adams, Iovu, Eskesen, Sibbald, Dolcek, Keresztes, Stirton, Watters and Constable were available as substitutes, while the starting group reflected both selection calls and absences.

That left Russell’s selection as the clearest marker of the day. A forward who had not started for Dundee United since May 2013 was back in the opening XI, and it came in a match where every change carried a reason attached to it rather than a routine shuffle.

St Mirren Pressure

St Mirren arrived under pressure too. They needed to win at Pittodrie and hope Kilmarnock did not beat Dundee, while a draw would only prolong the agony if Kilmarnock lost. St Mirren had also lost four league games in a row.

Kilmarnock’s recent run had tightened the margin further. They were safe if they won, no matter what St Mirren did, and they had taken five wins and a draw from their previous seven league matches at Rugby Park after winning 3-0 at St Mirren at the weekend.

For Dundee United, Russell’s return to the starting line-up was the sharpest development. For St Mirren, the combination of their own form and Kilmarnock’s results kept the pressure on every point left to play for.
