Southampton Fc face EFL charge over Middlesbrough spying claim
southampton fc have been charged by the EFL after allegations that a member of their coaching staff watched and recorded a Middlesbrough training session before the first leg of their Championship play-off semi-final. The club has asked for more time to complete an internal review as the disciplinary process moves quickly toward Tuesday’s second leg at St Mary’s.
Phil Parsons and the review
Southampton CEO Phil Parsons said the club is working with the EFL and the disciplinary commission while carrying out its own review. He said: "The club is fully co-operating with the EFL and the disciplinary commission, while also undertaking an internal review to ensure that all facts and context are properly understood".
Parsons also said: "Given the intensity of the fixture schedule and the short turnaround between matches, we have requested time to complete that process thoroughly and responsibly." He added: "We understand the discussion and speculation that has followed over recent days, but we also believe it is important that the full context is established before conclusions are drawn."
Rockliffe Park and Riverside Stadium
Middlesbrough claim a member of the Southampton coaching staff was found watching and recording a session at their Rockliffe Park base on Thursday. The alleged observation came two days before the sides drew 0-0 at Riverside Stadium in the first leg of the semi-final.
The EFL says its rules forbid any team from trying to watch another training session within 72 hours of a game. It has also accused Southampton of not acting with the utmost good faith to another club, and at no stage have Southampton attempted to deny the allegation.
St Mary’s and Wembley
Southampton would normally have 14 days to respond to the charges, but the EFL has asked the independent disciplinary commission for a hearing at the earliest opportunity. That timing matters because the commission can issue a fine, a points deduction or remove Southampton from the play-offs before the tie reaches its end.
Southampton boss Tonda Eckert left Saturday’s post-match news conference early after being asked multiple times, and refusing to answer, if he had sent a performance analyst to a Boro training session. The teams meet at St Mary’s on Tuesday at 20:00 BST, and the winners will face Hull City in the final at Wembley on 23 May.
There is recent precedent for punishment in this area: seven years ago, Leeds United were fined £200,000 after a member of staff was found acting suspiciously outside Derby’s training ground on 10 January 2019 before a fixture between the two sides. Southampton now face a charge that could reshape the final stages of their play-off run before the second leg is even played.
