Points North Bear Attack Kills 25-Year-Old Man

A bear attack in Points North, northeastern Saskatchewan, killed a 25-year-old man on Friday. The province said the bear was euthanized after the encounter, and investigators have now moved the animal hundreds of kilometres south for a necropsy.

Points North Investigation

The Ministry of Community Safety said the investigation is still in its early stages. A wildlife human attack response team, conservation officer services, the RCMP and the provincial coroners service are all involved.

The body of the bear was transported to a Saskatoon veterinary college after the euthanasia. That step will allow examiners to look for findings that may help explain what led to the attack in Points North.

Ministry Response

The ministry offered condolences to the man's family and reminded people living in communities frequented by bears to be mindful, keep a distance and avoid interacting with bears as much as possible.

Parks Canada recommends watching for signs that a bear has passed, including droppings, turned-over rocks and torn-up logs, and trekking in groups. The ministry also said anyone who has an encounter with a bear should call the Turn in Poachers and Polluters line.

For people in bear country, the immediate practical step is clear: report encounters, stay alert for signs of recent bear activity and avoid close contact if a bear is present. The investigation now rests with the agencies involved, along with the necropsy that could add detail to what happened in Points North.
