Sonny Baker Extends Hampshire Deal To 2028
sonny baker has signed a two-year contract extension with Hampshire that keeps him at the club until the end of the 2028 season. The 23-year-old fast bowler has turned a short county stay into a firm place in the side, and the new deal comes as he continues to push for a Test debut this summer.
Baker And Hampshire
Baker moved to Hampshire in 2025 from Somerset after having played just one first-class match before the switch. Since then, he has taken 47 wickets in 22 matches for Hampshire, with 36 of those coming in 11 first-class matches.
He said his main aim this year was “to earn the respect of the senior players by demonstrating more consistency in performance.” Baker added: “I feel I’ve come a long way since last year, all thanks to the experiences I’ve had here.”
White On Baker’s Rise
Giles White said Baker has “established himself as a key member of the team” and praised how he has “made the most of every opportunity.” White also said he adds “skill to complement his natural pace,” while calling him “fully committed” with “an exceptional attitude.”
Baker’s early-season numbers back that up. He played in four of Hampshire’s five County Championship matches at the start of the 2026 season and took 14 wickets in those games. Hampshire have now tied down one of their regular early-season bowlers while he is still building from a very small base of county experience.
England Opportunities
The extension also lands while Baker is still in England’s frame. He has represented England twice this year, first in a One-Day International defeat against South Africa and then in a T20 win against Ireland three weeks later.
That progression leaves him with a clear next target: a Test debut this summer. Hampshire have kept him through 2028, and Baker has already shown enough at county level to remain in the conversation after a start that has moved him well beyond the one first-class match he had before arriving.
