Peter Simpson dies at 81 after 478 Arsenal appearances

Peter Simpson has died aged 81, and Arsenal moved quickly to mark the loss of one of its most durable defenders. The club called him a major part of the 1970-71 Double-winning squad, a side that still sits near the center of Arsenal history.

Arsenal's Double-winning defender

Arsenal said Simpson made 478 appearances during his time at the club, leaving him as the 10th highest appearance-maker of all time. He first joined Arsenal on the ground staff before signing as an apprentice in 1961, then went on to spend 13 years in north London.

That run included the 1970-71 season, when Arsenal won the First Division title and the FA Cup to complete the first double in the club's history. Simpson was part of that team and remained one of the names tied to it for his long service and his work across the back line.

White Hart Lane and Knowles

One of his defining moments came at White Hart Lane, where he made a vital late block from Tottenham Hotspur's Cyril Knowles. It was the sort of intervention that rarely shows up in highlights reels but tends to linger in club memory when a player spends as long as Simpson did in Arsenal colors.

He never earned a senior cap for England, which stands out alongside the size of his Arsenal record. For a defender with 478 appearances and a place in the club's first double-winning side, the club career defined the story.

Arsenal's tribute

“Everyone at Arsenal is sad to learn that Peter Simpson has died, aged 81,” the club said in a statement on Wednesday. “Peter was a major part of the 1970-71 Double-winning squad, making 478 appearances during his time at the club.”

“All of us are thinking of his loved ones at this time.”
