Pwhl Hamilton expands to Detroit for 2026-27 season
Pwhl Hamilton expanded to Detroit on May 6, giving the league a new market that will begin play in the 2026-27 season. The team will skate at Little Caesars Arena, where Detroit has already built a clear PWHL following through multiple high-draw games.
Little Caesars Arena gets a team
PWHL Detroit will play home games at Little Caesars Arena, with Detroit-based Ally Financial as the team’s inaugural partner. The team jerseys will feature an exclusive Ally patch on the chest, while the permanent brand identity, including the name and logo, will be announced later.
Detroit’s arrival adds another market to a league that already has eight current markets: Boston, Minnesota, Montréal, New York, Ottawa, Seattle, Toronto, and Vancouver. For Detroit fans, the immediate change is simple: the city is no longer just a stop on the schedule. It has a team.
Detroit’s 2024-26 crowds
The league did not choose Detroit blind. The city hosted the league’s first-ever neutral-site game at Little Caesars Arena during the PWHL’s inaugural season in 2024, and that game drew 13,736 fans. Detroit has hosted four PWHL games over three seasons, more than any other neutral-site city.
Those numbers climbed quickly. A March 16, 2025 game drew 14,288 fans and set a then-U.S. arena attendance record for women’s hockey. A March 28, 2026 Takeover Tour game at Little Caesars Arena drew 15,938 fans and set a Little Caesars Arena women’s hockey attendance high. The trajectory gave Detroit a practical case for a permanent club rather than a one-off event market.
June events at Fox Theatre
Detroit will also host the 2026 PWHL Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, followed by the 2026 PWHL Draft on Wednesday, June 17, 2026. The draft will take place at Fox Theatre as a ticketed event open to fans, adding a public entry point before the franchise’s first season begins.
That schedule leaves Detroit with a fast timeline: awards, draft, and then the buildup to its first season in 2026-27. The only piece still waiting is the permanent name and logo, but the city’s role in the league is already fixed. Detroit is no longer hosting the PWHL from the outside.
