Harry Darling Returns to Norwich City XI Under Celtic Acore and Clement
Harry Darling is back in Norwich City’s starting XI, and celtic acore has become the clearest sign of how much his season changed after Philippe Clement took over. The 26-year-old centre back had opened the campaign well, but his role became tougher once Liam Manning left and Clement arrived.
Darling and Clement at Norwich City
Darling’s early months suggested a player settling quickly. He scored an early-season goal at Portsmouth and looked like the kind of centre-back Norwich had wanted when they signed him as a free agent.
That view stretched beyond the pitch. City fans believed he was the central defensive lynchpin they had lacked in recent seasons, and Swansea had wanted to keep him before he left on a free transfer. He could also have reunited with Russell Martin at Rangers.
McConville, Cordoba, and the shift
The picture changed later in the season. Ruairi McConville and Jose Cordoba made major improvements at centre back, and Darling found life tougher under Clement than he had earlier in the campaign.
He moved back into the starting XI down the stretch when McConville’s progress was halted by injury. That return came after a spell in which the pecking order had shifted and Darling was no longer as central to the back line as he had been in the opening weeks.
Why Norwich City wanted Darling
Darling’s own view of the move explains why Norwich pushed for him. In a recent interview on the Beyond the Barclay podcast, he said, "It’s a top club," and added, "When Ben (Knapper) spoke to me in the summer, I’d come down a couple of times before I signed. Obviously, being so close to home, it’s not a long drive."
He also said, "But the facilities are top-notch. It’s all ready to be a Premier League club, and I think Norwich deserves to be there." He added, "It’s all set up to be there, and that’s why everyone’s coming to be in the Premier League," and, "I knew a bit about the club before, and it was just in my heart. It was always going to be here, really."
For Norwich, the practical next step is straightforward: Darling is back in the mix after injuries and competition changed the defence around him, and his late-season return gives Clement another experienced option as the club keeps trying to rebuild toward Premier League level.
