United States Army Identifies 1st Lt Kendrick Key Jr After Morocco Recovery
The united states army identified 1st Lt Kendrick Lamont Key Jr after a search team recovered his body off the coast of Morocco. Key, a platoon leader in an artillery unit, went missing near a cliff during a training exercise on 2 May.
Moroccan searchers found the remains on Saturday in the water within a mile, or 1.6km, of where he disappeared. The recovery came during African Lion, the US Africa Command’s largest joint exercise with US forces, Nato allies and African partner countries.
Cap Draa recovery
Key went missing in Cap Draa, Morocco, while service members were taking part in the exercise. Search teams later found his body in the water near the area where he vanished, ending one part of the operation.
The recovery also narrows the timeline for those involved in the search. The body was found after he had been missing since 2 May, and the location of the recovery places it close to the point where the cliff incident occurred.
African Lion exercise
African Lion involves approximately 5,000 personnel from more than 40 countries, with the largest part taking place in Morocco. That scale made the search part of a broader military exercise rather than a standalone incident.
A second soldier remains missing, and search operations are continuing. For families and units tied to the exercise, the immediate reality is that one search has ended, while another is still active.
