Google expands Gemini Ai in Android 17 with 4,000 emoji
Google used its Android Show to preview Android 17, and gemini ai now sits behind improved dictation and vibe-coded widgets. The update also brings a full overhaul of Android’s 4,000 emoji, so the changes will reach everyday phone use rather than staying in a developer demo.
For Pixel owners, the first wave matters most. Google says the new emoji will arrive on Pixel phones first later this year, while other Android users wait for a wider rollout.
Android Show before I/O
The reveal landed ahead of next week’s I/O developer conference, which puts the Android Show into the role of the nearer, more specific product preview. Google also used the event to push Android features closer to Apple services and devices, instead of treating that interoperability as a side project.
That push is visible in Quick Share. Late last year, Google made Quick Share work with Apple AirDrop on some Pixel and Galaxy phones. Today, Google is adding a QR code option so iPhone users can scan and receive a file directly into iCloud storage.
Quick Share reaches more phones
Google says wider Quick Share to AirDrop support will roll out this year to phones from Xiaomi, Honor, and OnePlus. Oppo and Vivo were already on the list, so the compatibility push is broadening beyond the first supported devices.
Later this year, Google says it will also add Quick Share and AirDrop support directly into certain apps including WhatsApp. For people who share files across phone brands, that means fewer steps between sending something from Android and getting it onto an iPhone.
Pause Point and Screen Reactions
Android 17 also adds Pause Point, which appears when a user tries to open apps they have labeled as distracting. The tool uses a 10-second timer and suggests breathing exercises or opening a more productive app, and turning it off takes a full phone restart.
Screen Reactions is the other new behavior tool. It lets users record video from the selfie camera and what is on the screen at the same time, including photos, videos, and webpages. Google says that feature will launch on Pixel phones first sometime this summer.
Android emoji and Pixel first
Google also overhauled Android’s set of 4,000 emoji. The new versions are a little more three-dimensional, with added depth and detail, which should make the set feel less flat on newer displays.
The practical catch is rollout timing. The emoji change arrives on Pixel phones first later this year, so most Android users will not see the redesign until Google and its device partners push it more widely.
The open question now is which non-Pixel phones will get each Android 17 feature first, because Google has only named Pixel for the emoji update and Screen Reactions while leaving the wider phone schedule split across this year and later this year.
