Sandy Leon joins Braves after Sean Murphy's fractured finger
sandy leon joined the Braves on Tuesday after Sean Murphy went on the 10-day injured list with a fractured left middle finger. Murphy’s spot opened after a swing by Dodgers second baseman Hyeseong Kim hit his glove on Sunday, and Atlanta moved quickly because the club expects him out for at least two months.
Murphy's eight-week timeline
Walt Weiss put a number on the injury timeline: "It’s a broken bone, so you’re looking at probably eight weeks, anytime there’s a broken bone at least". He added, "He’s in a tough place, man. He’s been through it the last few years." Murphy had only returned on May 4 from offseason hip surgery after missing all of spring training and the first month of the season.
Murphy’s brief return left almost no runway for Atlanta to absorb another absence at catcher. He was 1-for-14 with six strikeouts after coming back, so the Braves were already trying to stabilize production behind the plate before the finger fracture made the need immediate.
León's Gwinnett numbers
León arrives with thin recent offense, which is the tradeoff Atlanta is making for experience. He hit.118 in 34 at-bats over 10 games for Triple-A Gwinnett through mid-April, then hit.143 in 10 games with Saraperos de Saltillo in Mexico. He was 1-for-12 last season.
Since 2012, León has played for seven MLB teams, including the Braves. That kind of travel history usually tells you the same thing: a club is buying familiarity, not upside, and Atlanta needs a catcher who can hold the job while Murphy heals.
Braves roster on Tuesday
The Braves also added José Azócar to the major league roster on Tuesday and optioned Jim Jarvis to Gwinnett to make room for him. José Azócar had been designated for assignment on May 6 after appearing in two games on the previous road trip, another sign the roster is still being reshaped around injuries.
Ronald Acuña Jr. remains on the 10-day injured list after a strained left hamstring on May 3, and Weiss said, "I think he’s doing well, but it’s still gonna be a little time." The immediate read is simple: Atlanta is patching together availability one position group at a time, and León now has to turn limited recent production into coverage behind the plate while Murphy sits for roughly eight weeks.
